The Searcher

Living near the sea as he did, Philip was always conscious of its various moods from flat calm to raging tempest. A keen yachtsman himself he knew a number of sailors and fishermen; men whose living depended on their facing whatever conditions the sea presented. For the many who went out to sea in those varying weather conditions there were some who were never seen again. To these he dedicated 'The Searcher'.

"The boat is made of forged mild steel welded together to symbolise indestructibility. The boatman is forged from one piece of mild steel to symbolize that he is a complete person, with no flaws, capable of doing the job. The lit candle is to act as a moving beacon searching for lost souls. The boatman is constantly looking, searching the horizon for signs of life.

'The Searcher' by Philip Betts [25x15x60cm]

The boat is propelled by force of thought; it goes to any place where it is needed, being steered by the boatman."

It was more than a dedication to sailors. He saw in it a great deal of himself - a searcher on the sea of life.
