Exhibitions

Philips work has been exhibited on five occasions.

In 1983 at the Grand Hotel, Torquay during the NAS/UWT teacher's union conference (he was a union representative at his school), he took his first opportunity to exhibit some of his early work. Certainly Endangered Species was completed by then, and it is remembered that the very heavy concrete tower of Unforgotten Prisoner (which needed two people to carry it) had to be hauled a number of steps at the back entrance of the hotel.

His second was a small 3 piece rolling exhibition at the Midland Bank in Paignton in 1985 in the window space above the cash machine. This exposure caught the attention of the regional paper The Western Morning News and an article was written about him. In turn this led to TSW becoming interested in him.

When on remission and out of hospital, his former pupils also got a chance to view the more private reflections of their teacher, as Philip exhibited his work at King Edward VI school, Totnes.

The largest exhibition to date took place after Philip's death in the summer of 1988. The entire collection in the hands of his family were put on display in a large glass cabinet in the centre of the main entrance room of Torre Abbey Mansions. Officially opened to the public by the Mayoress of Torbay, Mrs Armes, the exhibition lasted for a month. Some stills and home video of the occasion will in due course be available on the site.

18 years on following the launch of this site, six pieces of Philip's work joined an exhibition of sculpture in France North West of Paris, receiving very good reviews in the local French press.
